David A, Allerheiligen MD, 62, of Casper, died Wednesday July 14, of a massive heart attack while pursuing one of his favorite hobbies, operating his ham radios.

Dave was a man of many interests, and his life was one of adventure, both professionally and personally. Practicing family medicine was his primary career choice, and he did that successfully for a decade in McCook NE, but he also earned a degree and worked in electrical engineering, served time as a Commander/flight surgeon in the U.S. Coast Guard and led Wyoming Medical Center's occupational health program.

He enjoyed sharing his medical knowledge while serving for 10 years on the faculty of the University of Wyoming's Family Practice Residency Program in Casper. In 1998 he was the University of Nebraska Medical Center Department of Family Medicine's Alumnus of the Year.

In his private life, Dave was a sailor and a pilot, a proud member of Civil Air Patrol and a licensed ham radio operator active in the Casper Amateur Radio Club. The "Happy Days" Venture 22 tried the waters from the North Carolina sounds to reservoirs in Nebraska and Wyoming. Some of his best adventures in his Mooney aircraft were traveling over the Canadian Rockies to Alaska and flying to the Bahamas. He loved sailing with his in-laws Jim and Edwina Young in the Bahamas. When his poor health made it impossible to fly his Mooney, he and friends Michael Bums of Fort Collins, CO and Nick Phillips of Red Feather Lakes CO built their own experimental aircraft.

In his younger years, he ran five marathons, backpacked in the Rockies and participated in the 1987 BRAN (Bike Ride Across Nebraska).

Dave was born on May 9,1948 in Concordia, KS, to Arnold and Mildred Allerheiligen. He spent most of his growing up years in Holdrege, NE and graduated with the class of 1966. He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, then continued his education at the University of Nebraska Medical School in Omaha.

He is survived by his wife, Judy, of Casper; children, U.S.A.F. Lt. Col. Nathan Allerheiligen and wife Susan of Little Rock, AR, and Christine Kleckner and husband John of Eden Prairie, MN; his father of Holdrege, NE; brothers, Ronald of St. James, MO, Milton of Holdrege, NE and William of Harvard, IL.; grandchildren Ashley, Matt, James, Alii, Marc, Drew, Sarah, Rachel and Isabel; and many in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother and a son, Craig.

He was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church.

Graveside services will take place at Park Hill Cemetery in Syracuse, NE, where many family members are buried.
