Bio |
I married Jerry Layton (HHS 1956) in 1963. Jerry was a clerk for the Burlington Northern railroad in Holdrege. I went back to school in 1979, receiving my Bachelor's degree from Kearney State College in 1983. In 1993, we moved to El Paso, Texas, where I got a job as a U.S. Customs Inspector for the Department of the Treasury. (About a year before I retired, I became an Enforcement Officer for the Department of Homeland Security. Same job, different name, and different agency.) Jerry worked as a Building Inspector for the city. (He had worked as a carpenter, with his own business for about 10 years, and as a building inspector for a state agency 2 years.) We bought a house in Oxford (where our older son had settled with his family; our younger son and his family lived in Holdrege), retired from our respective jobs in September of 2004, and entered our "Golden Years". Our house was a real fixer-upper. My carpenter-electrician-plumber husband did all the work (with a little help from yours truly). I find I kind of enjoy painting walls. It is still in need of more fixing, but is, we feel, liveable. We seem to keep too busy with six grandchildren, 2 dogs, a cat, a big yard, and volunteering to spend much time on the house these days. We figure, if we live long enough, we may get it done yet. |
