Kim Leann Phelps, 40 years of age, of Kearney, Nebraska, (formerly of Holdrege, Nebraska) passed away on Monday, December 25, 2006 at her home in Kearney following a courageous battle with cancer. Kim was born September 26, 1966 at Holdrege, the second of three children of Charles "Chuck" and Melodie (McDonald) Sturgis. She received her primary education at Holdrege, graduating from Holdrege High School with the class 1985. She then pursued higher education at a business college in Grand Island, Nebraska.
On September 30, 1989 she was united in marriage to Todd A. Phelps and to this union one daughter was born, Logan. The family made their home in Holdrege, where Kim was employed by Holdrege Family Vision Clinic until moving to Kearney, Nebraska. While in Kearney, Kim was employed by the Kearney Eye Institute until relocating to Hays, Kansas. Kim’s complete focus was caring for her family, especially raising their daughter, Logan. Her love for crafts engaged Kim into starting an in-home business called Stampin’ Up!. She treasured the many friendship bonds formed throughout the years in business. In the summer of 2004 they returned to Kearney, where Kim continued her business and was employed part-time at The Buckle this past year.
She attended the Evangelical Free Church in Kearney and loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed spending her free time with her friends, scrap booking.
She leaves to mourn her passing her husband, Todd; daughter, Logan both of Kearney; her father, Chuck Sturgis and his wife, Linda of Holdrege; two brothers: Rick Sturgis of Broken Bow, Nebraska and Rob Sturgis and his wife, Amy of Omaha, Nebraska; step-sister, Karissa Crawford and her husband, Chase of Omaha; grandmother, Betty Wilson of Holdrege; grandmother-in-law, Mabel Strong of Holdrege; father-in-law, Milan Phelps and his wife, Brenda of Holdrege; mother-in-law, Pat Phelps of Omaha; sister-in-law, Heather Madsen and her husband, Dale of Kearney; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Melodie; grandparents: L.B. and Florence Sturgis and grandfather-in-law, M.C. Strong.
Kim lied in state at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege on Thursday, December 28, 2006 from 1:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established in her memory and will be designated at a later date.
