Pearl Catherine (Carlson) Anderson, 98 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2006 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Pearl was born December 12, 1908 on the family farm near Wilcox, Nebraska, the daughter of Ed and Maggie (Walters) Carlson. Pearl received her primary education at District #8 School at Sacramento and then graduated from Holdrege High School with the class of 1927. She then pursued higher education and Normal Training to receive her teaching certificate at Kearney Teacher’s College. Pearl then taught in rural schools for six years. On December 1, 1935 she was united in marriage to Paul B. Anderson and to this union five children were born: Deanna, Paulette, Robert, Marlene and Arlen. The family made their home in Holdrege, where the couple owned and operated the Hamburger Inn from 1935 until their retirement in 1975. They spent many hours at the Senior Center and enjoyed traveling on several tour trips sponsored by the Center. Pearl always thought the 1958 Diamond Jubilee was a great celebration with a huge parade, where the women all wore long dresses and bonnets, while the men sported beards and top hats. The couple was honored as the Swedish King and Queen in 1978. In 1985 she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul. Pearl remained active in the Trinity Evangelical Free Church and the Senior Center, where she especially enjoyed quilting. She continued to ride in the Swedish Days Parades through the year 2006. She loved spending time with her family and friends during her open house for her 90th birthday celebration. Pearl moved to the Chrisoma West assisted living facility in the spring of 2004 due to her failing health. She adjusted very well as she knew she needed help with her daily living. She leaves to mourn her passing her three daughters: Deanna Ostgren and her husband, James of Holdrege, Paulette Shere of Moorpark, California and Marlene Bennett and her husband, Paul of Chewelah, Washington; one son, Arlen Anderson and his wife, Janet of Independence, Kansas; seven grandchildren: Danna Wolford and her husband, Steve of Hastings, Dennis Ostgren and his wife, Diane of Holdrege, Donald Ostgren and his wife, Wendy of Holdrege, Nancy Nelson and her husband, Mike of Loomis, Jamie Shere of Moorpark, California, Chris Anderson and his wife, Gina of Joplin, Missouri and Sean Anderson of Mound Valley, Kansas; nine great-grandchildren: Matt and Mitch Ostgren, Megan and Neil Wolford, Caleb and Ashlyn Ostgren, Maddie and Claire Nelson and Kaylie and Brayden Anderson; five step-grandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren; one brother, Earl E. Carlson and his wife, Elaine of Holdrege; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Besides her husband, Paul, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Robert Paul born at rest; son-in-law, Charles Shere and sister, Leona Lyon.
